WHM Day 4: Marsha Serlin, CEO United Scrap Metal

After a divorce, Marsha Serlin found herself a single mother with two kids, holding down three jobs in Chicago to get by. She sold insurance at night. On weekends she worked in her brother’s clothing store. And on the side (her third job), she started “scrapping”. On “scrap day”, she left home at 5 a.m and picked up scrap all day.
That 3rd job, she started in 1978 with $200 and a Budget rental truck. That side hustle grew into United Scrap, and now covers nearly 40 acres around 16th Street and Cicero Avenue in Chicago, employs about 200 people…and did $200 million in business in 2011.
When she started the business, ‘recycling’ wasn’t even in the phone book. It was always ‘scrap metal,’ or ‘junk,’ not ‘recycling.’ So instead of United Recycling, she made it United Scrap, because that’s what people knew.
She has gone from making ends meet with multiple jobs, to building a thriving recycling business…from scrap. Read more about her story: http://www.glassceiling.com/qa-marsha-serlin-put-on-blinders/
