There’s an ongoing discussion in the media and social media that is both the pink elephant in the room, and a dirty open secret. We all know women lag behind in securing significant rounds of investment funds for their companies. Startups are poorly funded. Especially women of color, who are at a deficit due to limited access to opportunities. And as such, growth companies receive even less investment dollars than their startup counterparts because they can’t get attention beyond startup phase. The usual sound bite in the media is “we can’t find quality female founded companies with scalable, investable companies that fit our investment criteria”. But they could exist if given the proper nurturing and access.

Mogul Chix is open to women past startup phase who are ready to construct a solid company that is attractive to investors who can see a chance for a return on their investment. Graham is looking to pick up where accelerators leave off in building the next wave of successful companies. Where many accelerators start each cohort assuming that many of the companies won’t make it, Graham is betting on a much higher success rate because the six month program focuses on internal infrastructure of a- talent planning, streamlining operations, product/service optimization, growth planning, customer strategy, sales process improvement, exit and succession, financial planning for female founders, managing the investor relationship and more. Members are even offered training to become investors themselves.
“Many times, entrepreneurs get a glamourized view of what it means to start a business and the relationship they’re supposed to have with accelerators. They’re told ‘hey come to our accelerator if you have a game changing technology or company, we’ll give you xx dollars to start, offer you mentors and classes, and you’ll be ready to pitch investors” says Graham. “But that’s not reality. Twelve weeks is not enough time when you have little to no traction, few paying customers, and aren’t taught about generating real sustainable revenue. A lot of times, companies apply for accelerators with this idea that it will make them the next unicorns” says Graham.
It’s no secret that women overall receive a fraction of a percent of venture capital dollars that are given generously to companies run predominantly by white men. When you narrow that down to women of color, the percentage is even slimmer. There are also other barriers to women for attending accelerators. Most women can’t uproot their families to attend an accelerator for three months. Most women need more than three months to understand what it takes to run an actual job producing, revenue generating company. And most women aren’t properly prepare for scaling and introducing long term planning for their companies. Accelerators, while they produce valuable connections and resources (as does Mogul Chix), don’t help companies build solid foundations to build a company on. They’re perfect for serving as a launch pad, but there are few that focus on sustainability and growth. It’s about getting to market as fast as possible and securing funding from investors at an accelerator.
“We want to eliminate the barriers for women, especially women of color, and give them a competitive edge. We want to introduce women to ideal channel partners, vetted investors, and mentors who bring a wealth of experience and connections. And open up the real conversations about running companies. I’m not trying to replace the accelerator model. Not by any means.
