All I had was a brain, a phone and a phonebook.”
Janice Bryant-Howroyd was one of the people who inspired me to open my first company, a staffing agency. The quote above is also my own experience..except I also had a word processor (1994). Mrs, Howroyd started with nothing fancy or technological (there wasn’t any tech out there yet) but was determined to succeed anyway. She was able to build what is the largest certified woman-minority-owned staffing agency in the United States.
She left her (segregated) hometown in North Carolina in 1976 with $900. She started her company in 1978 at a time when racial issues were still a hotbed. While she says things have changed a lot for women in business since those days, she doesn’t want you to get it twisted. Women still have some work to do to level the playing field.
Today, her company has 12,000 clients and 2,600 employees in 19 countries, and is a true billion dollar company…the old fashion way (from the ground up).
Til next time,
Adrienne Graham
Founder, Mogul Chix, LLC
