Kalpana Saroj had all of the odds against her. She was born into poverty in India, became a child bride (12 years old), suffered terrible physical and psychological abuse by her husband and his family….and ultimately ended up starting and growing a multi-million dollar company. Through it all, and perhaps wha fueled her most, is she insists that ivy league degrees and fancy MBAs are not what make an entrepreneur.
At her lowest point, she swallowed a bottle of poison. Luckily, her aunt came in just as she took the poison and rushed her to the hospital. Her life of entrepreneurship began from a very real moment that made her aware that without money, she was powerless.
She worked a tailoring job (16 hours a day) and as she saved her money, she began applying for government grants. She was awarded a small grant that she used to launch a furniture business. But she kept her day job too. After several business pursuits, in 2006 Kalpana was appointed Chair of Kalpana Industries and the court transferred ownership of Kamani tubes to her. She has grown the company into a multi-million dollar enterprise.
