Sara started with a silly idea that was just crazy enough to work. After hearing Oprah Winfrey mention that she’d love to see something that function as pantyhose but without the feet or full restriction, Sara took a pair of her control top pantyhose, cut off the feet, Spanx was born, and the rest is history.
With $5,000 she saved from selling fax machines door-to-door, refined her invention, frequented the local university law library to learn how to write her own patent, begged manufacturers to make a prototype and cold-called buyers. Then she got into Neiman Marcus. Once in, she got her friends to call multiple locations asking for Spanx. Then Oprah called…and Spanx too off like gangbusters!
That’s the cliff’s notes version. But Sara is a perfect example of persistence, belief and hard work. Today, she has a company and net worth of over a billion dollars. And Spanx is a noun and a verb for many women!
Til next time,
