You’re More Ready to Hire Than You Think

In the small business community, the subject of hiring is often a tense conversation. It always makes me laugh when people say “I don’t want to grow any bigger than where I am because I don’t want the responsibility of managing people”. Usually that’s code talk for “I don’t think I can afford to hire”.

It sends off red flags for me. To grow a company, hiring is necessary. You know my stance on growth and scale. We are not islands nor are we superwomen. Nobody ever built a healthy multi-million dollar company all alone. And even if they did manage to do it, keeping it is a whole different level that requires a team.

Time to have a grown up business conversation.

Why do I keep hearing this? Simple. Because anytime there is something new introduced, it’s natural to fear it. When you are used to being the one-woman show and doing things on your own, it’s hard to step back and let other people do the work. It’s usually one of three reasons:

A) They are afraid to hire people and feel like they’ll have to manage them and do all the work.

B) They are afraid of how much it will cost them to have a bigger team.

C) They are afraid that they’ll inadvertently hire someone better than they are who could potentially take the spotlight awy from them.

Let’s be real. Sometimes it’s all three. I know plenty of people like that. And trust me when I say thinking like that leads to burnout and sometimes worse. There is no glory in doing it all yourself. There comes a point when you have to step back and let the professionals take your business to another level. We may have the talent, but we’re not meant to execute our visions alone.

I have counseled countless entrepreneurs and convinced many of them to step back to breathe. To trust and allow others to pick up the baton and carry the business to that next lap. I know it’s not always easy, but it needs to happen. There are things I simply cannot do in my business to get it to $100 million. But I am perfectly fine with hiring the people who know what to do to get it there. Ego and pride have kept many people stuck in neutral.

Tonight I want you to sit in silence and think about the future of your company. Don’t limit yourself. Start writing everything you see. Then make a list o people and the skills they need to get it there. When you look at that list, make note of the skills you do not possess. Hire for those. Then look at the things you could possibly do yourself. Then hire for those.

As CEO you owe it to the business to stick to your zone of genius, and hire out the rest. Stop making excuses. Speak with a professional (me) and create a staffing plan. This will serve as your business blueprint for hiring. It ensures you make the right hiring decisions at the right time, and plan the budget to make it happen. Stop making excuses, and definitely let go of the three excuses I mentioned above.

I told you, the grown conversations are behind closed doors. Get on the mailing list to participate. eepurl.com/c9IVHL
